Image Usage & Security Guidelines

The people, partners, and communities we serve often live and work in places where following Jesus or partnering with organizations like Unknown Nations carries significant risk. Because of this, every image in our Digital Asset Management (DAM) system has been assigned a security level. It is critical that every Development Officer understands and follows these guidelines without exception.

Unrestricted Images

Unrestricted images have been approved for public use and may be used to support the mission and brand of Unknown Nations.

These images may be:

  • Shared with donors and ministry partners.

  • Included in presentations, emails, newsletters, and other approved communications.

  • Downloaded and used in accordance with Unknown Nations brand standards.

  • Paired with stories, statistics, and ministry updates to help communicate our mission.

While these images are approved for public use, they should always be used in ways that accurately represent the people and work of Unknown Nations and uphold the dignity of those pictured.

Restricted Images

Restricted images contain highly sensitive content that could place individuals, ministry partners, or entire communities at risk if distributed improperly.

These images must never leave the Digital Asset Management (DAM) system.

Restricted images may NOT be:

  • Downloaded to a computer, phone, or tablet.

  • Sent by email.

  • Shared through text messages or messaging apps.

  • Uploaded to presentations or documents.

  • Added to any digital communication.

  • Stored outside of the DAM system for any reason.

Restricted images may ONLY be:

  • Viewed directly within the DAM system.

  • Shown in person on your own screen while meeting face-to-face with an individual or small group.

Before showing Restricted images

Before displaying any Restricted image, explain to the viewer:

  • The images are confidential because they depict people and ministry work in areas where lives could be endangered if identities or locations become known.

  • No photographs, screenshots, video recordings, or audio recordings are permitted.

  • The images are being shared solely to provide a deeper understanding of the realities faced by those serving on the front lines.

If you are not confident that these conditions can be met, do not show the images.

Our Responsibility

Security is not simply an organizational policy—it is a commitment to protecting the people God has entrusted to our care.

Many of the individuals represented in these images live in regions where persecution is real. A single image shared outside of its intended setting could expose ministry partners, believers, or entire communities to unnecessary danger.

When in doubt, always choose the more secure option. If you have any questions about whether an image can be used or shared, contact the Marketing & Communications team before proceeding.

Protecting people always takes priority over telling the story.
